Fort Osage - Sibley, MO. The present day fort is a replica of the one established in 1808 by William Clark, who would later become Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Louisiana Territory. It was one of the first permanent U.S. forts in the Louisiana Purchase and was named after the Osage Indians. Naming forts after the local Indian tribes became a regular practice -- it was Clark's way of showing respect for them.
